How we get to this figure
- Cost of a working day = monthly salary × 14 months ÷ 220 working days = €83
- Absenteeism = people × sick-leave days × 50% × cost per day
- Presenteeism = people × presenteeism days × cost per day
Assumptions and sources
- 27 working days lost to ill health per worker in Portugal in 2024 (Sustainable Health Index, NOVA IMS, 2025).
- 50% of those days are attributable to stress and psychological health problems: 13.5 days of absence per worker (EU-OSHA and Eurofound).
- Presenteeism of up to 27 days per worker: twice the attributable absence, following the EU-OSHA rationale (2014).
- Value of a day: the OPP uses about €65, based on Portugal’s average base pay of €1,309 in 2024 (PORDATA). Here we use your salary: 14 monthly payments (Portugal adds holiday and Christmas pay) spread over 220 working days.
